Super Bowl Running Thread
Live from my third floor, spacious apartment, it is SUPER BOWL 40. Like last year I'll post some running thoughts as the game progresses. The second quarter has just begun, and Seattle is ahead 3-0 (by the way, my pick is Pittsburgh, so things better change). Seattle definitely looks like the best team right now, and it seems like every time they have a big play, there is a penalty. Not a conspiracy theory though, they are correct calls. Pittsburgh cannot move the ball for the life of them. Also, the story we heard about the most before the game...Jerome Bettis coming home for his maybe last game...he hasn't even touched the ball yet! I understand that he is no longer the number one option in the Steeler running game, but no one else is moving the ball. Anyways, it is shaping up to be a pretty good game.
Non-game thoughts...I thought the National Anthem was well done. I also enjoyed the Dr. Suess "The Places You Will Go" beginning. Best commerical so far? Ameriquest had one that had me laughing out loud where the wife and daughter walk into the hospital room of the husband/dad only to find the doctors saying "well, that killed him." If you saw the whole thing though, you would know that they used the defibulator (spelling?) thing to kill a pesky fly.
Okay...first drive for Seattle stalls after a nice punt return is called back (go figure) and one first down. Pittsburgh will now try to actually pick up a first down and add to the tremoundous stat of 1 passing yard. Catch you at half time.
UPDATE- It is now 6:53 Central Time and the first half is just about to end. The Steelers are going into halftime with a 7-3 lead. I still think the Seahawks are playing better overall, but about three things happened at the end of the half. First, Ben Rothleisberger (I know I didn't spell that right) pulled one out of his rear end by tossing a 30 yard pass on third and forever down to the 2. Then on third and goal, he dove into the end zone. Do I think he made it? No. The call on the field said he did, and when looking at the replay there is no indisputable evidence. Like I said, I don't think he made it though. Finally, the Seahawks played pretty stupid at the end leaving a timeout on the board and settling for a 50+ field goal. He missed it, thus the 7-3 score. Jerome "The Bus" Bettis did finally get a couple touches too, and almost a touchdown. No earth shattering commercials since my last update either.
I guess the NFL did just have a commercial about how the Super Bowl brings us all together. Just this afternoon, I was talking to a friend about how funny/cool it is that the Super Bowl is such a HUGE holiday. It really is a holiday too. I read this week it surpassed New Year's Eve in the number of parties that people hold, and it is second to Thanksgiving in food consumed. EVERYONE watches, whether for the actual game or the commercials or the halftime entertainment. It truly is American though.
The Halftime Show (presented by Sprint- had to throw that in, especially in this marketed world) will be starting up soon. The Rolling Stones are performing and I'm looking forward to it. Last year Paul McCartney and now the Stones, I'm enjoying this trend of taking HUGE!! stars/legends and having them perform at the single biggest sporting/television event of the year. Before this recent trend of going to the "oldies but goodies" it seemed like the Super Bowl was going for huge stars AT THE PRESENT. Which usually means some top 40 crap and an overdone show (i.e. Britney Spears a few years ago, the infamous Wardrobe Malfunction with Janet Jackson, pretty much anything produced by MTV). Well, I best be going. The Stones are about to come on, then the second half begins. I'll catch you at the end of the third quarter.
UPDATE: It is 8:17 Central Time. Fourth quarter has just started. The Stones at half were alright. The sound system seemed to be off, but it was overall a good performance. A couple things about them though- it is a little (okay a lot) gross to see these like 50/60 year old guys with their skin tight clothes, bellies showing, etc. Rock stars are to say the least...odd. I also liked seeing the "crazy" fans in the crowd, rocking out. Most of them aren't even old enough to have been alived during the Stones hey-day...which was probably right around the first Super Bowl- 40 years ago. I would have hated to have been in the section that was at first covered up by the giant tounge. You miss the first part of the show.
Anyways, the game is GOOD. Pittsburgh looked like it was going to pull away. A 75-yard TD by Willie Parker. Then looking to put the game away inside of the 10, Big Ben throws an INT that is returned 76 yards and sets up a Seahawks TD. As I type, Seattle is around around the 30, looking to score again. Could've been down at the 1 yard line, except for a timely (if you are a Steelers fan) holding call. INTERCEPTION by the Steelers! Wow, a lot is happening as I type. I better go. 4th Quarter of the Super Bowl, a 14-10 game, outcome undetermined. It is how the Super Bowl should be. Catch you when the game is over.
UPDATE- 9:03 PM. Game over. Congrats to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Super Bowl XL Champs! I picked them, so I'm happy, but there was some questionable calls that went against Seattle. When it came down to it though, the Steelers had the big plays, including a pass from Antwaan Randle-El (a wide receiver) to Hines Ward for the last TD of the game. Seattle also killed themselves with terrible clock management in the last two minutes of both the first half and the second half. End result, 21-10. Bill Cowher, the coach of the Steelers, wins his first Super Bowl. This makes me happy because now he will remain coach there for even longer (he's only 48) and I think Pittsburgh is one of only like 4 teams that Kirk Ferentz would ever leave the Hawkeyes for. Also, the first Super Bowl for Jerome Bettis in his maybe last game. This makes me happy because he seems like a class act. Everyone likes "The Bus." I'm trying to think of who should be MVP (they haven't named him yet) and it is tough. No real stand out performances tonight. Maybe Hines Ward...he had a TD and a couple other big catches. Maybe Big Ben, for just being the QB of the winning team. Not a bad Super Bowl, but definitely not a great one. And what about the commercials? There were NO standout ones. Like I said earlier, one made me laugh out loud. Another kinda made me chuckle, but other than that, they stunk. I'm trying to delay in my typing, so I can see who wins the MVP award, but I don't know if I can hang on that long. The Lombardi Trophy is being handed out now, so maybe I only have a couple minutes left. Brief pause here...
While waiting...Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa was at the game tonight with his sons. He said last week on WHO-TV Sound Off (my favorite sports show) that he promised his sons that if the Steelers ever made it back, they would go. What an honest politician ;) I really do like Tom Vilsack by the way. He has done a pretty good job in the state of Iowa, better than a lot of other governors in this country as of late when budget crunches have affected all. I hope to see him run for President in '08. As you can guess, he is a HUGE Steelers fan, as well as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins. I believe he was originally born there. Hines Ward is the MVP. You saw it in the above paragraph, I called that one! Anyways, I guess that does it. Back to work tomorrow. Hope you've enjoyed the Super Bowl and my random thoughts.
